Calculate a consignment commission

Free, no sign-up needed. Updated on 31 October 2026.

With consignment, the shop keeps its commission on the selling price and pays you the rest: paid to you = price × (1 − commission). To receive a specific amount, set price = amount wanted ÷ (1 − commission).

Displayed price
€40.00
Kept by the shop
− €12.00
Paid over by the shop
€28.00
What you keep, materials paid for
€18.00

To receive €30.00, display €42.86.

The method, step by step

Paid over by the shop = displayed price × (1 − commission).

Price to display to receive an amount = amount wanted ÷ (1 − commission).

Example with the values above: a piece priced at €40 with a 30% commission. The shop keeps €12 and pays you €28. Once the €10 of materials is paid for, you keep €18. To receive €30, you would need to price it at 30 ÷ 0.70 ≈ €42.86.

Compare with what the same piece leaves you at a market: consignment saves you the stall and travel costs, but the commission is paid on every sale. To compare your markets: work out whether a market is profitable.

Frequently asked questions

How is a consignment commission calculated?

The shop takes a percentage of the displayed selling price. With a 30% commission on a piece sold for €50, the shop keeps €15 and pays you €35.

What price should I display to receive a specific amount?

Divide the amount you want to receive by (1 − commission). To receive €35 with a 30% commission: 35 ÷ 0.70 = €50.

Should I keep the same price as at the market?

Shops often ask for the same price everywhere so that your stall doesn't undercut them. So work out what you keep in the shop at that price, and check that the piece is still worth leaving there.

Does the commission include VAT?

It depends on the shop and on each person's status: have the consignment agreement specify whether the percentage includes all taxes, and ask your accountant if in doubt.
